Why do joints & ligaments degenerate?

Ligaments are structural ‘rubber bands’ that hold bones to bones in joints – acting like the body’s shock absorbers. Ligaments can become weak or injured and may not heal back to their original strength or endurance. Ligaments will also not tighten on their own to their original length once injured.  This is largely because the blood supply to ligaments is limited, and therefore healing is slow and not always complete. To further complicate this, ligaments also have many nerve endings, and therefore the person will feel pain at the areas where the ligaments are damaged or loose.

We can think of our joints as the hinge on a door.  Unless the hinge is fixed to the door, the door just isn’t going to open or close right and it’s the same exact story with our joints.  If we are athletic or if we are just getting older there is some gradual and natural degeneration of the moving parts of the body due to ongoing recurrent mechanical stress, and failure of tissues to repair.  This can come from lack of nutrients, lack of circulation, problems with oxygen utilization due to aging and inflammation. When this happens the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage become dehydrated and weaker. This results in laxity and more abnormal mechanical stress and shearing forces on the joint. Abnormal shearing forces and torsion (twisting) cause more joint dysfunction. This leads to a progressive separation of the ligaments from the superficial covering on the bone called the periosteum.

This pulling on the periosteum creates a space, which the body fills in with new bone.  These new parts of bone are called osteophytes. They are the premier signs of degenerative arthritis in & around the joint. Osteophytes and joint laxity result in a reduced range of motion, which causes strain on surrounding muscles which then become either over or under worked leading to more dysfunction & pain.

Prolozone causes repair and tightening of the lax structures, partially torn connective tissue and ligaments. Prolozone halts the pain/inflammation cycle. This allows for better circulation, oxygen utilization, increased blood flow carrying nutrition, and hydration of the damaged tissues.  This allows for a healing environment within the joint to develop and results in increased range of motion and decreased pain. Because Prolozone has the ability in many cases to actually correct the pathology of the disorder, there is a 75-85% chance for the chronic pain sufferer to become permanently pain free. By repairing the connective tissue this is all that is needed to
permanently reverse chronic pain.

Dr. Desmond, how do you relieve a patient’s chronic pain?

Chronic pain is a problem for many people. It is all about finding and treating the root of the pain, which is often acute pain from one area that has been not been resolved and has migrated into related areas.

Areas fail to heal because of a localized decrease in oxygen utilization. Treatments with ozone 03 (highly saturated oxygen) will reverse this and areas of chronic pain will become normal again; chronic degeneration will begin to regenerate.

How do you find the root of the chronic pain?

With chronic pain, for example, cervical neck pain, I track the nerves and ligamenture related to the pain, as well as related symptoms felt by the patient, to determine fascia buildup in the area which is akin to thin layers of scar tissue. The goal is to break down and dissolve the area of buildup to increase circulation and decrease inflammation. Acupuncture is one helpful tool with the addition of Prolozone therapy which gets to the root of the pain and accelerates healing. Cells become more vital when penetrated with ozone O3 (highly saturated oxygen) and this facilitates the surrounding area becoming more vital as the oxygen moves throughout the area. Decreased oxygen utilization is at the root of all chronic disease, and I believe is also the fundamental cause of chronic pain and degeneration.

What about resolving acute pain?

Acute pain from injury that has happened recently is easily treated after a few times (2 – 3 treatments) because finding the root is easier and it has not migrated to affect other areas of the body.

Dr. Desmond, how do you treat lumbar or sciatic nerve pain?

With lumbar, hip or sciatic nerve pain the goal is to decrease inflammation, decrease the related scar tissue and decrease inflammation of related areas. I treat with Tui-Na, which is Chinese version of osteopathy alignment, to assist in healing and relieve any nerve impingement. While acupuncture is one helpful tool to treat back pain, the application of Prolozone therapy is extremely helpful get to the pain root and healing is accelerated this way. Age and condition of the patient will relate to how fast it will heal. The condition can be further exasperated by osteo-arthritis and for this I would apply Prolozone therapy as well as homeopathic and herbal medicines to the treatment plan to more deeply aide in healing.

What is your treatment plan for knee pain relief?

To relief acute knee pain from, for example, a sports injury (not related to osteo or rheumatic arthritis) the treatment is fairly simple to deal with inflammation factors related to ligament, meniscus injury, and joint. Prolozone therapy with the assistance of acupuncture would be my treatment plan. Acute knee pain is relieved within 2 – 4 treatments.

How to deal with chronic knee pain?

To rehabilitate chronic osteo-arthritic knee tissue and tissue surrounding the knees and to halt the arthritic degeneration, Acupuncture and Prolozone therapy are my treatment protocols. Hypoxia or the inadequacy of cellular oxygen reaching the body’s tissues causes degeneration in the joint capsule and ligaments. Hence, the application of oxygen in the form of ozone for chronic knee pain. Simple Acupuncture will help, however, joints will heal faster with use of Prolozone therapy. With chronic joint pain I would add herbal medicines to assist. Chronic knee pain will begin to be somewhat released with 3-5 appointments and further healing can take additional appointments, especially those with osteo-arthritic degeneration.

Dr. Desmond, what is your treatment plan for frozen shoulder?

To regenerate the joint and eliminate the pain of frozen shoulder or rotator cuff injuries, especially with osteo-arthritic elements , Acupuncture and Prolozone therapy are my treatment protocols. Hypoxia or the inadequacy of cellular oxygen reaching the body’s tissues causes degeneration in the ligaments, hence the application of oxygen in the form of ozone. Simple Acupuncture will help but any joint will heal faster with use of Prolozone therapy. With chronic joint pain I may add herbal medicines and/or homeopathics to assist in healing.

For more information on Ozone read pdf article on “Prolozone – Regenerating Joints and Eliminating Pain by Dr. Frank Shallenberger”.

What about hip pain relief?

Treatment protocols for hip pain would be the similar to other joint pain problems. To regenerate the joint, especially with osteo-arthritic elements, it is all about finding and treating the root of the pain, which is often chronic pain from one area that has been not been resolved and has migrated into related areas. The goal is to break the area of buildup to increase circulation and decrease the inflammation and tissue, nerve, and structural damage. Acupuncture is one helpful tool with the addition of Prolozone therapy which really get to the root and accelerate healing.

Is Ozone helpful for other ailments?

Respiratory problems, chronic or acute are effectively treated using ozone. Inhaled ozone is bubbled through olive oil prior to inhalation via nasal tubing that is into inserted into the nostrils. The gas released after passing through the bubbler no longer contains ozone gas but contains a high percentage of ozonides which react with the lung and nasal/sinus membranes and have a strong sterilization effect on fungal and bacterial infection in the sinuses and lungs.

Ozone therapy relates to both deep water diving and space medicine/science in that the goal is to maximize oxygen absorption in adverse situations. Ozone therapy is mitigating hypoxia, the lack of uniform oxygen being delivered to various parts of the body. Hypoxia leads to the degeneration of the body & disease in the body. To read on this subject, see ‘Ozone Therapy’ under the ‘Health Services’ section of this site.

How do you treat chronic headaches?

Headaches or migraines can be a symptom of many ailments such as:

1) Hormonal imbalances to liver or gallbladder imbalances or too much toxic heat in the body. These types of headaches can be diagnosed and treating using Traditional Chinese or natural medicines and Acupuncture treatments.
2) Headaches can also be caused by unresolved pain from other areas of the body. A number are caused by lack of oxygen to musculature of the neck (or lower on the spine), that restricts the flow of oxygen to those muscles, in terms of blood supply to the brain. Degenerative spinal issues can also precipitate headaches.

In my practice, 30% – 40% of headaches are caused by imbalances in the body or a combination of imbalances in the body with unresolved pain. Approximately, 60% of headaches are caused by constriction or lack of oxygen to the musculature or degenerative spinal issues.
